CAREL drives a new transcritical store in Italy

The Carel retail sistema is the heart of a new drive to broaden CO2 awareness on the Italian market, with improved energy efficiency and encouraging the use of carbon dioxide as natural refrigerant for food retail applications, following a recent supermarket installation with CAREL technologies in southern Europe (Turkey).

System design and all the refrigeration equipment were provided by EPTA refrigeration.

THE SYSTEM

The system comprises:

- Complete installation monitored by CAREL PlantVisorPRO, which collects all vital information from racks, cases and cold rooms in order to intuitively manage the system. It also monitors energy meters for maintenance and power consumption analysis.

- EPTA ECO2-Small, extremely compact booster transcritical compressor rack ideal for small supermarkets, hard discount stores and petrol stations.

- Compressor rack (MT and LT compressors, gas cooler, back pressure and flash gas valve) controlled by a single CAREL pRack pR200T.

- EC fan gas cooler.

- Floating suction pressure and other algorithms are applied to maximise system energy saving.

- Medium temperature suction line has a maximum capacity of 100kW with 3 compressors, the first driven by frequency inverter.

- Low temperature line has one compressor driven by frequency inverter.

-Particular attention is paid o medium temperature suction superheat with hot gas and liquid injection protection.

-Each cabinet is controlled by a CAREL MPXPRO.

We will continue to work with CO2 food retail applications, as attention to green solutions and the reduction of harmful emissions for the environment is increasing year after year in all supermarket chains, technology is improving and solutions that a few years ago seemed to be feasible only in northern European countries are now also become available in southern European countries.

Italy, for example, is one of the countries where CO2 transcritical installations are still quite rare, yet there are areas (such as Belluno) where the deployment of this technology could be both feasible and efficient, without significant industrial barriers compared to conventional systems.
