State-of-the art humidification, CAREL solutions at the Santa Caterina Museum

CAREL was asked by the Santa Caterina Museum in Treviso to ensure the right ambient conditions for conserving the museum’s works of art. Conservation of artworks in fact requires a constant indoor temperature of 20°C ± 2°C and a relative humidity of 50% ± 5%. In addition to these requirements, ambient conditions inside the exhibition rooms need to adapt quickly in the event of rapid changes in heat load (sudden variations in occupancy or changes in outside climatic conditions).

“The materials used on paintings and works of art in general are extremely sensitive to the conditions in the places they are kept”, commented Stefano Ruzzon, CAREL Business Unit Manager. “Failure to ensure the correct conditions risks irreversibly damaging objects we have inherited from past civilisations. As a result, we have designed reliable and technologically advanced solutions that offer the highest efficiency in terms of climatic stability, while at the same time saving energy. It is an honour for us to have contributed with our experience and know-how to the exhibitions at the Santa Caterina Museum, making sure the works on display in Treviso do not undergo variations in ambient conditions and are thus perfectly conserved for the entire duration of the exhibition”.

CAREL has exploited its experience to design a special control solution for air handling units, featuring a pCO series programmable controller with customised software for managing variable flow-rate fans, heat recovery units, heaterSteam series electric heater steam humidifiers and heat exchanger coils capable of handling the air flow-rates needed to respond quickly to the above-mentioned variations in load. At the Santa Caterina Museum in Treviso CAREL also supplied the supervision system, with PlantVisor PRO, which allows remote management of all ambient parameters, including the percentage of fresh air in the total volume of air handled.
